Global Financial Crisis Impacts B-School Applications

Alt

So far, nothing has escaped the global economic crisis.

Every job market from Spain to Japan has suffered; people everywhere are scurrying to find work and money. Today, even the most successful professionals in Manhattan feel the financial burden. Nightclubs and restaurants are swarmed with doctors and investment bankers, begging for part-time waitressing jobs and bartending gigs.

Needless to say, MBA Applications have also been hit by the wave. As the unemployment rate increases and work opportunities decline, people everywhere start looking for other options -- and going back to school is the first to come to mind. The solution seems easy enough: after all, graduate school serves as a kind of buffer: a permissible suspension from the desperate need to acquire a reasonable income.

Compensating for a Low GMAT Score

Alt

It’s not unusual for students to pay us a visit or call and blurt out, “My GMAT score is embarrassingly low, but I really want to get into Wharton (or INSEAD, NUS, IE, Columbia, etc.). WHAT SHOULD I DO?”

Of course, as established GMAT test-prep specialists, we advise them to study and retake the test. However, we do meet students who are unable to raise their GMAT scores to their dream level in time for the application due dates. Sometimes their base scores were simply extremely low, or they are left with only 2 weeks before their deadlines.

Whatever the case, some students want to know if there is any way to compensate for the lack of a brilliant GMAT score.

Find out how to compensate here.

TOEFL Reading Tips

Alt

Here are some suggestions for ways to build skills for the three reading purposes included in TOEFL iBT.

•Scan the passages to find and highlight key facts (dates, numbers, terms) and information.
•Practice this frequently to increase reading rate and fluency.
•Increase vocabulary knowledge, perhaps by using flashcards.
•Rather than carefully reading each word and each sentence, practice skimming a passage quickly to get a general impression of the main idea.
•Build up the ability to skim quickly and to identify the major points.
